What We Miss

What We Miss

We still miss:
Cats that sing
Zeros we can count on
Fears we knew and almost liked
Promises that cost nothing
Horror films that scared others
Making old exceptions to new rules
Borders without soldiers
Reservations for places unknown
Not knowing what we now know

What we should not have missed:
Wars close but feeling distant
Kindness grown customary
The many we never stood for
Those we did not stand against
Conquerors without armies
History that whispers
Cunning that hides openly
Thoughtless acts of mercy

Yet we still fight hard to forget and forget
Knowing what we know now
