Tomb of the Unknown Dead

The Tomb of the Unknown Dead

We sadly pull you from the earth
Prague, 1344, plague
Delhi, 1760, smallpox
Soweto, 2028, TB
Everybody dies but
Not everyone all at once

The military virus genetics’ precise
Its mutations far less
Some of the algorithms made by AIs
We did not realize
Right and wrong had changed places

Quickly cities flowered with death
We watched the petals bloom from space
Saw and failed to stop them

We dig up the dead from past pandemics
Finding genes to save those left
The survivors stand fierce and furious
Shout at us that life goes on
The future can conquer the past

We re-inter your bones at last
Mother from Prague, child of Delhi
What we did not foresee
We will not forget
