Just a Second

Just a Second

They say a second lasts exactly a second
That was never true
A thousand milliseconds in a beating heart
Is not the eternal present of bees
A second lasts eons in a machine mind
Creating worlds where light is time

You can hear a second in the brass tick of a clock
So unlike the long second
Of the toddler staring at that clock,
Her grandmother holding her high in her lap
Not the force of that second when you fell in love
Or short as the years recalled on parting
Throw moments of our lives in time’s maw and
Many get torn

Time shifts from second to second
In all who feel the weight of time
The older we get the faster it spins
An instant can feel timeless or endless

And when time finishes
Will we have time to talk?
